SWGReborn

So it appears that the Galaxies emulator has been rolled out?  Had someone mention it to me today, figured I'd drop it in here.  https://swgreborn.com/forums/

Tanker (tangk'er)n. 1. A dusty, crusty, grease-covered, dirty, sweaty, bright eyed, fuzzy faced, haircut-needing, beer-drinking, underrated, over-worked, underpaid, oversexed, little s%#* who can take a Tank and do more battlefield damage in ten minutes than a grunt squad can do all day.

I hope the emulator is coded better than the website :o
From what I can gather it's emulating something fairly close to when the servers closed? I see mention of space missions so they must also have JTL in it. This could be interesting...

I know a couple guys who are in it now, and you just need the ISO of a hard copy to use it.  From what I'm told, it's definitely all the way up to the point when it was shut down, so it's got the NGE, Mustafar and all that in it.

They're finding it behaves pretty much the same, mechanics wise.  Graphics are still dated, but they've dug up mods that improve that.

Well with the way MMO's work, all of that would reside on the client anyway so... The emulation is all going to be server side emulating an authentic swg server heheh. I still have SWG installed actually, just have not opened it since soe shut the servers down.

Will have to give it a try ;D

Edit: Looks like I was wrong, they are not using the clients files except for the executable. Their project launcher thing is downloading 7GB's of TRE files  :o

Well it works. Pretty straightforward to setup. The longest part was waiting for their updates to download.

The game server is tied to forum account, so basically signup on their forum and then use those same credentials to log into the game.

There are a few things bugged in the game, some starship terminals are not enabled for example, and they are still polishing up space missions. However everything else seems to be working. I have started legacy quests on tat, and I launched my sorosub yacht into space from Bestine, space works just like it did. I have not got a combat ship yet or found a working recruiter.

Very promising emulator, they have done an excellent job on it imo.

Well it's been down all weekend and they seem to only have a staff of 3 people, one of which is busy with college.
In the short time I was able to try it out it seemed stable, however a few things were not working yet, ingame mail for example does not work yet, space missions and space trainers are almost ready in test. You can fly around and shoot stuff though, and most things on ground seem to be working.

From my understanding it's a 2010 copy of the actual server code that a former SOE employee "borrowed" that reborn has gotten ahold of heh. I would imagine it would only be a matter of time before everything is figured out in it. I just hope the project staff, being as young as they are, do not get into the internal ego power struggles like so many of the emulator projects have done and destroy itself from within.

Time will tell I suppose, I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on this project. Seems they have quite a large following in a short amount of time.

Their QA test server has blue frogs on it so one doesn't need to invest any time in getting to 90, that server also gets wiped a lot being a test. Sure brought back memories logging in, even if it was with new characters.

Well that didn't last long, it would seem swgreborn is no more. The forums are gone and the following notice is posted on the website:

Quote:I regret to inform everyone that SWG Reborn will be discontinuing its services and shutting down as of today.
This wasn’t my decision and it especially wasn’t an easy one. Nearly five years ago, I joined the Project SWG team in hopes of reviving SWG after it had been wrongly shutdown. About two years ago, several of the PSWG staff had mysteriously left, and it ended up because those few staff members had obtained the source code to SWG, hoping they could start a server to bring the SWG experience back to everyone. Many know them as the team behind SWG Reveniens, and many people didn’t appreciate what they had decided to do. It wasn’t long until internal drama had caused them to fall apart, leaving the source to many others to attempt what they had tried to do.
This is how SWG Reborn came into existence. Almost a year ago, after obtaining the source, I began to tinker with it, with the hopes that I could once again relive SWG at its prime. It wasn’t long before I managed to have zoning working, but this was without scripts – almost all the game mechanics relied on scripts that had to be preprocessed and converted to java code that needed to be compiled. Even after that, it wasn’t long before that problem was tackled and solved. Soon after having a semi-stable server, I began to bring friends and their friends onto this server, testing the waters of this gift that had been leaked by a member of the Reveniens team. Videos from one point of this server’s life can be found on my YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/user/xseefox/videos), it was a seeming success.
After several months of this servers life, it was given a name and a forum, SWG Reborn was finally called SWG Reborn, this was all thanks to Aconite, who I had brought on to help me deal with the community aspect of things, and he did a damn good job – SWG Reborn couldn’t have happened without him.
But things soon took a spin for the worst… what had happened to the Reveniens team was starting to happen to Reborn. The very people who spawned the project disagreed about things and we couldn’t seem to resolve it without a seeming battlefield appearing.
All I’ve wanted to do since I started the little server running out of my house was to bring SWG back and play. Everything I’ve done has been in hopes of bringing back the game that I spent my childhood playing, the very game that inspired me to investigate computers further and eventually program.
Today (1/11/2015), it had come to my attention that several of our staff members had suddenly left to form a new project. My name has since been smeared and many lies have been said regarding what has transpired here within the Reborn project. This whole projects intent was to bring you all one of the most iconic and inspiring videos game back – I know many people believe I’ve been here for other reasons, perhaps fame or money, but the truth is, I’ve never received a single dollar from working on SWG or Reborn, and this idea of fame is ridiculous. I believe this desire to bring SWG back can be traced all the way back to when I had initially joined the Project SWG team (which is still alive and kicking, they’ve got some talented developers over there and Holocore looks great).
I’ve spent well over several hundred hours over the past several weeks, along with Ristana, in working on the server to allow you all to play, and to read that I’ve been the person to cause all these problems is extremely disappointing and discouraging. I’m very disappointed and saddened by the way things have transpired over the past few days, and am shocked how easily people can forget the big picture: this whole project was meant to bring SWG back.
I know I’ve wronged many people over the lifespan of SWG Reborn and even before, and I sincerely apologize to these people. Most times, these decisions were done in what I believed the best interested of resurrecting this MMO.
I respect the decision made by the former staff to start a new project and I wish them good luck but I’m very disappointed with their decision to attack me and smear my name.
It didn’t have to happen like this, and I’m really sorry to all the people who have been let down by this project – this wasn’t fair to anyone. The remaining staff of this project have decided to call it quits and we are subsequently shutting down the forum and website.
I'm really sad to see this project go.

Seefo and the remaining SWG Reborn staff

I wonder if the "adult" part of this is true. One can only hope.
