Speak of reality, where the hell you been the last 8 years? Gas is 3.40 a gallon, average house costs 270K, Employers no longer fund health care. The average family here needs to make 88K a year just to be average. Min wage will earn ya 15K.....?
No way I coulda backed up those numbers 10 yrs ago except ONE....!

Don't forget the debt bubble too.  Watch out when THAT deficit bill starts coming due in the US.  Way your gov.'s been borrowing the last few years makes the Reagan years look like black ink.

LOL you guys watch too much news.

About gas prices, go back and figure the percentage of your salary you spend on gas.
Now go back and figure what percentage your grandfather spent.
Guess what, gas is cheaper now than it has ever been.

People talk about crime rate going up.  WRONG!!!

The crime rates are actually lower than they have ever been.
It's just with the internet and TV and such you know about it all.

Remember, no news is good news and all you hear on TV and in the newspaper is the bad.

If you keep listening to the media, all you will hear is bad news.

There is a great article on this very subject.  I'm going to try and find it and post the link.

I never watch the news as most of it is fake sensationilism. Real life experience here, I make 5 times what I did 10 years ago, yet stuff costs 10 times more than they did back then. So even though I'm now making 6 figures often times it still feels like i am back welding at the factory for peanuts. $50 to fill up my wrangler's 16 gallon tank bites the wallet pretty good. Most "middle class" houses around here are 350K+, outside of my budget. 100K might get you a crackerbox in the ghetto. Cheapest one room apartments around here are 500/month, and thats if you like having crack neighbors.

The dollar is tanking, the Euro is very strong. I went to egypt 2 months ago and the dollar to egypt pound ratio was 5:1... 2 years ago when I went it was 7:1... that really hits home when your paying for stuff in pounds and it's costing you more dollars than the previous trip. BTW euro to egy ratio is almost 10:1 if that tells you anything about where the dollar now stands. Inflation sucks man.

I haven't gotten a raise in 2 years either, yet that 20% inflation keeps on trucking.

Don't want to get into a big political debate, but just my 2 cents for what it's worth, course week from now that will only be 1 cent.

Maybe it you who is watching too much news? Maybe you don't run a budget or pay your bills. I happen to do both for a household and a buisness, so my "opinion" is hard formed by "Reality".

Speaking of opinions and 2 cents, you might stand a bit better off if you just expressed yours, rather than telling folks what they do and don't know....  8)

Look, I don't want to fight and I'm not really trying to cause trouble.

Do I like everything Bush has done?  Certainly not.
I'm really disappointed that he hasn't revamped our tax system.  (Consumption Tax anyone?)

But trying to blame all our percieved "problems" on him is a bit ridiculous.
And people saying that we were better of with Clinton....well I really don't want a man that will look into my(America's) face and lie like he did, in the Oval Office.  Much less cheat on his "wife" while in office.

Just what kind of moral grounds does that set for our children?
I do care about this country, I want things to be better for my children than they are for me.

And you may be having a tough time, I'm not saying you are not.
But we live in the richest nation in the world.
Our people on welfare are in the top 10% of the wage earners IN THE WORLD.

So yes, thingsaren't perfect, never will be.
I would just like to say....step back....look at your life....we are all blessed....blessed to be here in the USA....blessed with family....
blessed with friends....blessed with freedom.

And Tank, I'm sorry for the thread hi-jack.

Condradulations on the graduation.
I hope you find a job you enjoy doing and are richly rewarded for your efforts.

...ya know....that's the oddest highjacking I've ever seen in here lol.

Eh, it happens.  Tongue

As for the job that I was hoping to get, that hope was dashed.  Apparently I didn't make it through the qualification screening, and wasn't a "top qualifier" or something like that.

So that's nixed.  Granted, there's not much to get in the field of History as a History major unless you're in education.  Knew that from the get go though.  So I'll have to find something else.  Maybe John Deere will accept me...

As long as I have decent pay (over $20k a year to pay the loans would be quite nice) and benefits, I won't be too picky.  Cept I'm not going to be a secretary.  I hated that when I was an Administrative Specialist for the Army, and I would hate it more in the civilian world.  It would be a waste for me, when I know I can do far better for a company than simply be their typist.

But I'm getting off that soapbox now.  Just have to keep looking...and fast.  If all else fails...I can go to Japan and teach English.

Might have to practice my Japanese now...Konnichiwa!  Toyota!  Suzuki!  Kawasaki! Sushi!  Sashimi!  ;D

Actualy, I found the discussion rather illuminating, when I compared it to my experience up here in Canada.  With the current Canadian dollar being worth 92 cents US(remember it was about 63 cents not long ago?), gas prices up here have hit $1.21 a LITRE.  If you care to do the math and convert that to US gallons, you accept what you pay down there far more easily.  As a courier, trust me, fuel prices are currently my LARGEST single cost each month. At least, by being self employed, it IS deductable at tax time.  ;D  And prices up here are CHEAP compared to over in Europe.  Ask Simon.

As Azis has experienced in the US, here in Canada the situation is much the same.  Most jobs that are available are minimum or NEAR minimum wage and don't begin to cover monthly costs for a household.  That's not to say there aren't good paying jobs up here.  Part of the reason there are so many minimum jobs available is due to the significant migration of young workers going to the prairies(esp. Alberta) looking for a job in the oil industry.  Big money, BUT infrastructure hasn't kept up and housing is VERY hard to come by and what IS available is extremely expensive.  Cost of living HAS to be taken into account, wherever you go.

I considered becoming a History major, while in University, myself.  Problem was, back then, I really couldn't see much of a market for it.  I hope you have better luck Tank.  Despite more interest in history these days, I suspect it's still a tough industry to make a living on.

My advice remains the same. 1st, get started in a local job doing WHATEVER you're able to land, regardless whether it has anything to do with your degreee or not. You'll need SOME income, just to get started.  Once you've achieved that, then you can start looking around for OTHER opportunities more in line with what you're after.  Generally, employers look at your track record in past jobs to get an idea what kind of an employee you'd make in THEIR business, as well as your education.  Once in a business in line with what you're looking for, you'll be able to watch for openings further up in the company. Many employers give preference to hiring from within, so it gives you a better position to climb the ladder.  Finding something you like that ALSO pays well is the ultimate target.  Bare in mind though, as Holmes has pointed out, that just because you have a good good paying job DOESN'T mean it's easy to pay the bills.  People tend to spend as they earn.  Having SPARE income seldom occurs.  Wink
