If you PC is only a couple years old it should be plenty to run this game. It may be a driver issue... ATI is known for driver issues unfortunately.

There is a beta driver that people are claiming cures the black screen issue, it's for Vista/Win 7... not sure about card model. But the download for it is here: http://downloads.guru3d.com/AMD-Catalyst...-2826.html (scroll almost to bottom of page for the download links)

Another thing is maybe check out the TOR CS forum, many are having similar issues to you  http://www.swtor.com/community/forumdisplay.php?f=11
