I'm with Tank on the saving your respec for now....once it's used afterall, it's gone for good. One of the 1st professions I mastered was Scout and aside from the scent masking ability, nothing else really helped me too much, esp. once I owned a house. Currently I have NO scout skills at all.
Melee skills are fun if you play mainly 1v1 against opponents, the downside of course is you need medic skills(or better) to heal yourself as you fight a tough opponent. (I got rid of my medic skills shortly after the respec cause I wasn't able to heal myself sufficiently anylonger without putting significant points into it, which I needed elsewhere). As I found out last night (graphically) while playing WoodStock over in Flurry(yes, I'm my OWN sidekick...lol) melee skills aren't much help though in a large group during a firefight - it's hard to get close enough to make use of them.(Heh, I switched to ranged weapons and practically made Master Marksman from near nothing in that 1 hunt!)
Ranged weapons are far more usefull in a firefight, since you can hit from a distance. Again, it would depend on the distance involved, but usually in RBL's case it's against imp forces, so I'd say power over distance.(just my opinion).
Ultimately, it really depends on you as to which direction you take. I went the crafter route, much like Simon, and eliminated much of my combat ability for a time, but that get's tiring after a while since you can't combine crafting with fighting very well. :'( :'( If I ever manage to finish this weaponsmithing, I have a feeling you'll see me building my fighting skills again. I HATE being able to make these toys, only to be UNABLE to USE them. :'( :'(
