Well I think the topic should be the future of XvT and XWA in RBL rather than RBL as a whole. This since we're pretty much actively playing other games now, though I'm not sure how many are.
With xvt and xwa, we already have an IRC server (our chatroom uses it) so that is an option we can definitely utilize regardless. As for the other options they are all viable.
Direct play room on msn would be nice as that would allow a central place for all clans.
If we setup our own "direct play" type of place on RBL then we'd be host to other clans as well, but how are we gonna pay for bandwidth? Nobody clicks ads anymore as I can attest with having ads on rbl for awhile, nobody clicks them so it's not worth having them IMO. If we do donation based, who's going to donate to play an old game? Then again maybe the bandwidth would not be that much since all a direct play room would be host to is the "chat" and the launch part of the game. One other large obstacle with this is finding/writing the code to run on the server that would act as a game launcher.
IP based games arent too hard to do. If we use our IRC server to host "rooms" so to speak (currently any user can create their own room) then whomever wants to host the game publishes their IP in the room etc. In fact this is how the zone works, except it automatically publishes the hosts IP to the others via the launcher.
My vote I think would be first to try and get a direct play room, then go from there... they have direct play support for some games older than xvt on there so I dont see why they wouldnt deny xvt/xwa.
