What killed it for me many years ago was XvT not being able to do NAT. Which basically means if your router has the public IP and assigns your computer a private and thus all other computers in your house a private... and shares that public IP essentially with your household.
The only way to get it to work is to bring that public IP directly to your comp. This is true for both hosting and joining a game... I tried like heck many years ago to make it work and finally got ahold of a dev who worked on XvT who told me it's impossible to work with NAT at all.
So depending on your network setup it may be an easy thing to let your comp have the public directly, or it may be impossible, depends on your setup what router you have, if there's a switch involved etc..
Another method is to find a free dialup to play the game (since the game doesnt need broadband), but even some dialups dont assign publics anymore heh. Is Netzero still around?
