Alrighty after updating my video card and sound card drivers I'm in baby! correlian run was full so my character is on the ice breaker server. as of 10:28 pm cst was listed as lightly populated pve server. am going to play a bit and nerd gasm now LOL

spoke to soon. the opening movies played but when it went to start the first mission I get the power wheel/bar across the bottom of the screen, and the radar, then the rest of the screen is black. can't see a thing. and couldn't see a thing when I created my character lol. so not sure if these issues can be solved. gonna be very upset if it comes down to I need a new tower to run this. don't have the cash for that....so I may be out before I even got started..........doh

Yeah corellian run has been busy lately. I think it will settle down once the launch newness is over.

Am gonna be out of town till dec 30th. I have an ATI Radeon card, but since I'm not home I don't remember the model number. Looking over the specs I'm pretty sure the problem is with the "shader 3.0" part. My card is one of the older ATI models. Just threw me for a loop cause the cut scenes played perfectly fine, then it hung up on the gameplay part. Sad thing is my comp is upgraded as far as it can go as it's a couple years old. Sooooooo I'm gonna have to get a new pc before I can rejoin the fun. If you have any "magic" that could help me with the current set up I'm all for it LOL. Thx m8

This issue arises due to the old ATI drivers 11.8 so make sure you have up-to-date drivers for your video card and have installed all pre-requisites for the Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Run the game as administrator and make sure that you have added swtor.exe and launcher.exe as firewall exceptions.
Some people can get in to the game by modifying the default Fullscreen option. To do so, locate the client_defaults.ini file located in the installation directory of the game. By default it is located at:
C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\BioWare\Star Wars â The Old Republic\swtor\retailclient
C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\BioWare\Star Wars â The Old Republic\swtor\retailclient
Open the file in a text editor and modify the value FullScreen=true to FullScreen=false. Save the file and try restarting the game.
On that ini file mentioned above, changing that setting should change it to windowed mode. In addition I might suggest turning off shadows too as that boosts fps on older cards:
change doShadows=true to doShadows=false

^ ^^ ^^ won't be able to test this out till next thursday or friday as I'm currently working off of my dad's laptop and not home lol. if this works I owe ya man :-X will keep ya posted. hopefully we won't lose this thread heh. gotta go for now. thx for the help m8! may need you to run me through this ini file thing if the firewall and driver things don't work. *S* (updated the drivers the other day and got the cinematics to play.....just went black screen at the gameplay portion)Ace out

If you PC is only a couple years old it should be plenty to run this game. It may be a driver issue... ATI is known for driver issues unfortunately.
There is a beta driver that people are claiming cures the black screen issue, it's for Vista/Win 7... not sure about card model.
